This has been a very big year for the royal family—a royal engagement, a royal wedding, and the birth of a brand new baby prince. And today was another joyous occasion for the monarchy as they celebrated Prince Louis’ christening.
The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out from her maternity leave looking fabulous in a beautiful outfit and matching hat by her designer of choice, Alexander McQueen.
Proud parents Kate and William doted over their newest addition along with big brother George, big sister Charlotte and the rest of the royal family. Following the church service, the Duke and Duchess hosted a small, private tea at Clarence house where they followed the English tradition of serving christening cake. What is christening cake, you ask? It is the top tier of the wedding cake, you know, the part that we Americans serve up on the first wedding anniversary. But in England it is traditional to serve at the couple’s first-born child’s christening. But when your parents are the future King and Queen of England, that top layer of cake is big enough to ration out over three children’s christening tea parties.

William and Kate’s wedding cake was eight layers high and made up of 17 individual fruit cakes embellished with cream and white icing. The intricate decorative details included upward of 900 individually iced flowers and leaves representing 17 different varieties and a garland design topped the cake to match the garlands that adorn the top of the Picture Gallery in Buckingham Palace. This is the room in which the cake was displayed during the couple’s 2011 nuptials.
