How to Make a Basket Wreath

Looking for a new container garden idea? Why not try one on the front door? This wire basket lined with sheet moss is perfect for welcoming guests this spring. Don't forget the 3 necessities of a container garden when picking your flowers: thrill, fill, and spill. You can choose any flowers that work with your home's color scheme. We chose a mixture of purple, red, white, and yellow flowers that all compliment the deep turquoise color on the door. A mixture of green foliage adds yet another bright color to the mix. Be sure to check the sun that your door gets so that your flowers are compatible. You might think this basket would be too heavy to hang on your front door, but we have a trick. With the addition of a few empty water bottles in the basket, you'll cut down on the amount of soil needed to fill it and allow for better draining so your flowers don't drown. Make sure the basket is secured well to your door, so it can withstand the opening and closing of the door.

Love the door? Bermuda Turquoise (728) by Benjamin Moore is less formal than cobalt and not as beachy as most turquoises. Paired with a white or cream house, this deep color in a high gloss will stand out.

Line a small wire basket with sheet moss. We found this lightweight basket at World Market. Fill two-thirds of the basket with empty plastic water bottles to take up space without adding weight and also help with drainage.

Arrange spring flowers and foliage in the soil. We used snapdragons, pansies, violas, dusty miller, maidenhair fern, string of pearls, and golden variegated sweet flag.
